How do you aim to meet the unique needs of the child?
The progress of all students is closely monitored by their class teacher; lesson plans are differentiated to meet individual’s needs.
During the primary transition, teacher assessment levels, along with standardised reading and spelling ages, are used to identify individual student’s needs. Where students are identified as working at or below National Curriculum level 3 in English, they are placed in a nurture group which allows them greater curriculum time to improve their literacy, numeracy and social skills.
At KS4, alternative vocational courses are offered to students who are unable to access a full range of GCSEs. These could include:
Land-based Studies, Entry Level English and Maths, Preparation for Working Life and Prince’s Trust, or other appropriate courses.
For some students with VI there is a need for specialist equipment for them to access the full curriculum. Within each teaching area there is a variety of specialist equipment available e.g. talking calculators in Science and Maths, tactile globe in Humanities. There are CCTV’s (magnification equipment) in each Faculty area and many teaching models that can be accessed. All students with a visual impairment are supported 1:1 during practical based lessons for safety reasons.
How do you promote positive relationships and ensure good, ongoing communication with families?
Each student at the Academy is issued with a school planner. This can be used for home-school communication and is signed each week by the tutor and parents/carers.
Parents are able to contact the *SENDCo at the Academy at any time if they have any concerns about their child’s ability to access the curriculum. The *SENDCo, or another member or the SEND team, will reply to their call within 48 hours.
A Parent Support Advisor is employed by the Academy through the Local Authority. This is a non-teaching member of staff whose role is to help parents/carers take advantage of the opportunities that exist for children and young people in education and to support parents with a wide range of family issues.
