Additional and Special Educational Needs

How do you aim to meet the unique needs of the child?

The progress of all students is closely monitored by their class teacher; lesson plans are differentiated to meet individuals' needs.
During the primary transition, teacher assessment levels, along with standardised reading and spelling ages, are used to identify individual students' needs. Interventions are then planned to meet identified needs.
At KS4, Broadlands offer a range of GCSE and some more vocational courses such as BTEC Sport and a Cambridge National qualification in Child Development.
Onsite we have the Connect unit, which is a specialist unit for students with social, emotional and mental health needs as identified in their Education, Health and Care Plans. We have places for six students. The aim of the unit is to reintegrate students into mainstream lessons whilst giving them additional support to be successful.
We are proud of our inclusivity at Broadlands and go the extra mile to ensure students with SEND are happy and successful.

How do you promote positive relationships and ensure good, ongoing communication with families?

Each student at the Academy is issued with a school planner. This can be used for home-school communication and is signed each week by the tutor and parents/carers.
Parents are able to contact the SENDCo at the Academy at any time if they have any concerns about their child’s ability to access the curriculum. The SENDCo, or another member or the SEND team, will reply to their call within 48 hours. We try and work collaboratively with young people and families as we know that the voice of the young person and their family is key to ensuring the correct support is put in place. The SENDCo also attends parents evenings, takes time to meet parents at transition events and will invite families to write support plans together.
